The physical world was given us by the Creator as a gift. Rest assured that HaShem gives only infinite and eternal gifts. So why is there lack, disease, death and all kinds of suffering?

HaShem crystallized matter from pure spiritual light. It is our job, as his partners (Bnei Brit), to reveal the infinite (and thus Him) within physical matter. It is a universal spiritual tenet that the highest lights will be revealed from within the darkest obscurity. We also know that, like the Afikoman, the Kadosh Baruch Hu is hiding from us.

Science and technology are in the business of revealing hidden secrets and possibilities from within matter. One would have to be obtuse not to realize that science has been freeing us from many restrictions and opening up new possibilities. Some remark that S&T even reveal esoteric secrets by embodying ideas that, formerly, were accessible to only a few. An example are the polarities of Chessed and Gevurah exemplified in electrical circuits and Tiferet as resistance as in the primordial circuit of Abraham and Yitschak with Yaacov as resistance and who becomes Israel when the circuit is realized and the lightbulb (for example) goes on.

But we also need to recognize that S&T also bring problems and dangers. I submit that this is because science is operating outside the realm of Kedusha. Most people mistake science for it's body - labs, instruments, methodologies, etc. while the soul of science is creativity - that Eureka "spark" of vision originating in the transcendent without which new hypotheses would not be available for checking in the laboratory. The problem is that sparks are restricted light, phenomena of impurity - the world of Klippot.

To conform with Kedusha, the scientist's connection with higher worlds (the transcendent) would have to be more encompassing and more enduring. The formula for this radical state of creativity is described in the "Shma" prayer as loving HaShem with ALL your heart and ALL your soul and All the means at your disposal. This is true obsession and nothing less will take scientists into the PaRDeS to break the cosmic bank and reveal unlimited abundance (Shefa Elyon) within the restricted matter where, like the Afikoman, the Kadosh Baruch Hu is hiding.
