  • EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Project Mind Foundation[1] (Keren Mivtsa Mochin[1] ), an international, Jerusalem based, nonprofit organization, was created to introduce a new approach to sustaining humanity and improving environmental quality through the 21st century. It submits that science and technology can be greatly accelerated and made more responsible by means of a new holism through the execution of the project named "Project Mind." To accomplish this, the project will foster a new creative mechanism called "Accelerated Thought."

PMF[2] identifies the source of humankind's troubles in our ignorance of the world around us and, more specifically, in the obscure and highly complex nature of matter that is so highly resistant to investigation. Our foundation is committed to constructing a uniquely nurturing environment for dedicated scientists who, through unprecedentedly deep and intense creative contemplation (Accelerated Thought), will penetrate this obscurity and envision innovations which will provide holistic solutions to the problems troubling humanity as a whole. Project Mind is thus planned as a delicate project based on subtle new understandings of the creative process.

The cost for the construction and operation of the Project Mind facility, for the first three years, is estimated at $30 million. It will house up to 36 scientists at any given moment along with a complement of staff concerned with their physical, psychological and spiritual welfare.

PMF presently[7] has 63 founding associates[3] in 14 countries from varied fields and backgrounds committed to the establishment and operational success of this project.

    STATEMENT of PURPOSE

The Project Mind Foundation introduces a courageous, new approach to sustaining humanity and creating environmental quality through the 21st century. It foresees the eventual precipitation of a new model for science in which the overwhelming importance now attributed to the mechanisms for validating hypotheses (i.e., instrumentation and methodology) will be transfered to the function of creative vision which, when sufficiently holistic, carries largely within it the means for its own validation.

    STATEMENT of NEED

Owing to materialist philosophies that are steadily replacing the traditional outlooks that dominated former ages, earth's resources are rapidly being depleted and our environment is being compromised. Well over 95% of all scientific discovery and invention has occurred in our lifetime and that percentage increases with each passing day as discovery accelerates. The problem is that it is easier to make use of technology to abuse and destroy (e.g., environmental damage, terrorism, run-away viruses, etc.) than to ameliorate and build. Thus in spite of many benefits, scientific discoveries increasingly have a net destabilizing effect on the world so that we now find ourselves facing escalating global crises.

What is needed is an encompassing and integrated "Holistic Science" fueled by enhanced creativity rather than the fragmented, largely mechanical and polluting science that now prevails. The results to be expected are authentic environmental quality, general well-being and superior health care and increasing longevity generating a wave of global hope to neutralize widespread despair and the multitude of negative consequences that tend to stem from despair.

Methods and instrumentation for the validation of hypotheses aside, science is, fundamentally, an exercise in vision. Scientific vision is a function of our inborn potential for visualization akin to "Virtual Reality" connecting us, through our body-mind's "cyberspace" with knowledge that is as yet, unmanifest. It is an enterprise that demands the very best of us, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. Project Mind calls for a degree of creative intensity and engagement with matter never before contemplated. It is best characterized by the ancient formula, "... with all your heart and with all your soul ... ," that implies total commitment, even obsession at least for a time, to one's research at the expense of all else - devotion reminiscent of certain modalities of monasticism and retreat. This effort (which we call Accelerated Thought) is evoked, somewhat, in the literature describing the integral scientific visions of Tesla, McClintock and others.

    FRAMEWORK

Project Mind is planned as a delicate empirical project/experiment requiring a custom-designed facility for its highly specific function. Our long-term (5 years) objective is to construct a specially designed building in Jerusalem to house Project Mind. It will be a dedicated facility designed specifically for PM's unique function. Its cost for construction and operation for the three first, determining years is conservatively estimated at $30 Million. It will house up to three dozen candidates for Accelerated Thought at any given moment along with a complement of staff concerned with their physical, psychological and spiritual welfare. Staff will be especially prepared for the extreme states that certain candidates may experience as a by-product of extended, intense contemplation.

    OBJECTIVES

    Short-Term:

    • scouting for a maximum of 72 founding associates (there are now 63 in 14 countries) who will be responsible for establishing and maintaining the project
    • scouting for a minimum of 36 candidate scientists to participate in the project itself
    • scouting for the support staff specialists (medical, psychological, spiritual and technical) who will help run the project
    • establishing educational frameworks to enable the general public to learn about Project Mind and the vision behind it and to become involved on some level

    •
    Long Term:
    • to construct a specially designed building in Jerusalem to house Project Mind - for greatly enhancing creative vision in scientists.
We anticipate that our activities for the next 4-5 years, until the project itself is established, will be primarily of an educational, promotional and administrative nature. While our purpose is not to seek wide consensus or to proselytize, we do need to cast a wide net in order to find and encourage those exceptional persons who share our vision.

    =============

    Projected Budget for 1997-8:

This budget, projected for 1997-8, is based on very substantial contributions we have been led to expect will be forthcoming in the coming months. For reasons of economy and convenience, most communicating among associates has been by private email and through a mail list and message board set up exclusively for the associates and paid for, until now, by an associate in California. We hope to bring the 30% of our associates, currently without Internet access, into the loop by greatly increasing conventional communications with them or by purchasing the necessary equipment and training for them to join the intense PMF activity on the Internet. At least three of the associates are eager to dedicate themselves full-time to PMF for a modest wage. All three, through volunteer work, have proven themselves to be unwaveringly dedicated to PMF. For some time we have been exploring the compelling but expensive option of producing a video worthy of being shown on science TV channels.

    Personnel (3 x $26,000) - $ 78,000
    Advertising - 30,000
Documentary video on PM (8-12 minutes) - 70,000
Screensaver creation on PM themes - 5,000
Preliminary architectural design of the PM facility - 20,000
Communications (phone, fax, mail, etc.) - 3,000
Office Equipment (computers, printers, modems) - 10,000
    Travel - 20,000
Printing and office services - 5,000
Translation (foreign language brochures and literature) - 5,000

    Total: $246,000
    ============

Associates, cumulatively, contribute in excess of 100 work hours per week to PMF tasks. These tasks currently include the production of flyers and brochures, translation work, the study of granting organizations and foundations soon to be canvassed. There is also the handling of inquiries and correspondence, management of the PMF web sites, establishment of web links, moderating the PMF "Mochin" mail list (340 subscribers), the creation of PMF promotional screensavers, the preparation of a documentary video, preparation and placement of ads, and web scouting for new PMF associates and candidates for project participation.

    CONCLUDING REMARKS

Those involved in PMF and especially the many associates who cooperated in the drafting of this document are mindful of the esoteric impression that some readers are likely to receive from the PMF agenda as described. It is to be expected that far-reaching aims involving novel concepts and approaches will seem impractical to some of those who encounter them for the first time. It thus bears mentioning that all those connected with PMF are responsible professionals who carefully weighed the PM ideas before associating themselves with the PMF agenda. In some cases, over a year of intense daily dialog over the Internet preceded the decision to associate. We are thus convinced that what is proposed here is philosophically, psychologically and theoretically sound, given to implementation and worthy of your financial support.
